Augusto de Prima porta
Augustus of Prima Porta is a statue of Caesar Augustus that was discovered on April 20, 1863 at Villa of Livia. Today it is exhibited in the Braccio Nuovo of the Vatican Museums. The statue is an idealized image of Augustus, that is based on the V Polykleitos Doríforo century. He applied the contrapposto of this sculpture, creating diagonals between the parts, a feeling of tense and relaxed members, is a typical feature of classical sculpture. DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS 1. It is a figure in the round, carved in marble, and still retains traces of gilding, purple, blue, and other colors that were painted. 2. IMPORTANT FACT: The Colosseum is one of the most famous monuments of classical antiquity. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1980 by UNESCO and one of The New Seven Wonders of the World. In ancient times had a capacity for about 50,000 spectators, with eighty rows of bleachers. Inside the Coliseum they were gladiator fights and public spectacles. It was built just east of the Roman Forum, and the work began 70 d. C. and 72 d. C., under the rule of Emperor Vespasian. The amphitheater, which was the largest ever built in the Roman Empire, was completed in 80 d. C. by the Emperor Titus. Its inauguration lasted 100 days, participating in it all the Roman people and dying tens of gladiators and wild beasts who gave their lives for the pleasure and entertainment of the people in their celebration. |
