It is a beautiful study full of air and life." ARTIST: Vincent van Gogh
NAME OF THE PAINTING: Eugène Boch YEAR PAINTED 1888 TECHNIQUE: Oil on canvas INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PAINTING: On 11 August, his idea began to take shape: "I should like to paint the portrait of an artist friend, a man who dream" and thats the reason why Van Gogh decided to make this painting. Rather than simply reproduce physical likenesses, van Gogh wanted to explore symbolism and mystery by using colour. He thought he might achieve this through a portrait of a fellow artist. This work, which van Gogh originally titled The poet, was paired with an opposing portrait of Lieutenant Paul-Eugène Milliet, which he named The lover 1888. |
